5 Common Causes of Engine Sputtering

It can be disconcerting to hear unusual noises coming from a car’s engine. Sputtering is a clear indication that something is not right and can point to a range of issues.

1. Spark Plugs

Spark plugs are responsible for firing up the engine when it’s started, as they send a spark of electricity to ignite the fuel-air mixture. Over time, spark plugs will begin to wear out. Replacing spark plugs is typically a quick job and relatively inexpensive. However, if they are not replaced, you could experience a decrease in performance or even find yourself stranded.

2. Catalytic Converter

As a part of a car’s exhaust system, a catalytic converter is responsible for taking harmful gases, such as carbon monoxide, and turning them into safer compounds, such as carbon dioxide and water. Failing to address a failing catalytic converter can lead to decreased engine performance, the smell of rotten eggs, and even a failure to pass an emissions test. A qualified mechanic will clean or replace the catalytic converter.

3. Mass Airflow Sensor

The mass airflow sensor is responsible for measuring the amount of air being taken into the engine, so that the amount of gas can be balanced with the air. If a car’s mass airflow sensor is not operating properly, the engine is likely to be fed either too much or too little fuel. Failure to address this problem can lead to decreased performance and gas mileage. A mechanic can help determine if the sensor needs to be cleaned or replaced.

4. Exhaust Manifold

A leaking exhaust manifold can cause the release of hot gases back into the engine. Failure to address a leaking exhaust manifold can lead to harmful gasses being released back into the car, a louder than normal sound, reduced fuel efficiency, decreased performance, and even a failed emissions test. Ignoring this leak will also lead to more costly repairs.

5. Fuel Injector

As a car is driven, the build-up of excess carbon is a natural byproduct. This excess carbon can clog the car’s fuel injector. As the fuel injector is clogged, the car will begin to lose performance and fuel efficiency. A qualified mechanic should inspect the car to determine if the fuel injector can be cleaned or needs to be replaced.

Engine sputtering can be unnerving for a driver. While it can indicate a range of problems, ignoring the issue will likely leave you stranded or stuck with a much larger repair bill. IIn the event of engine sputtering, take your car to a qualified professional as quickly as possible.
